Victor Boniface reacts to CAF Player of the Year snub

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has responded to his omission from the CAF Player of the Year award shortlist, despite an impressive season with Bayer Leverkusen.

The official nominees were announced earlier today, with the award ceremony set to take place on 16th December in Marrakech, Morocco.

However, Boniface’s name was missing from the list, even though fellow Super Eagles players Ademola Lookman and William Troost-Ekong made the cut.

Boniface’s Reaction to CAF Snub

In response to his omission, Boniface commented on a post from Leagues Reporter on X (formerly Twitter), which outlined his achievements from last season:

  • Won the Bundesliga
  • Won the DFB-Pokal
  • Europa League silver medalist
  • Scored 21 goals and provided 10 assists
  • Featured in 34 matches

The post described Boniface’s exclusion as a “big surprise,” given his remarkable contributions.

In a light-hearted reply, Boniface tweeted:
“Rookie of the Season, Team of the Season. No worry I no play AFCON, Na why I dey wait for memes d’Or.”

This humorous comment suggests that he is jokingly awaiting a “memes d’Or” award, playing off his reputation for posting funny content on social media.

Lookman and Troost-Ekong Headline Nigeria’s CAF Hopes

Despite Boniface’s absence, Lookman and Troost-Ekong remain in contention for the CAF Player of the Year award, raising hopes for back-to-back Nigerian winners following Victor Osimhen’s triumph last year.

Boniface’s exclusion has sparked conversations among fans, with many surprised that his achievements for Bayer Leverkusen were not enough to earn him a nomination.
