Victor Osimhen: We will not underrate Guinea-Bissau

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has revealed the Super Eagles will not underrate Guinea-Bissau when they file out for the two-legged 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

On paper, three-time African champions Nigeria are favourites against a Guinea-Bissau team ranked 118th in the FIFA ranking. Despite the gulf in pedigree and profile, Italian Serie A leading goal-scorer Victor Osimhen says the Eagles will accord the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau due respect while pushing for wins in the two-legged tie on March 24 and 27, 2023.

“We are looking forward to it and I’m happy to be back to the squad it is an amazing feeling and really expecting amazing result in the two legged game against Guinea-Bissau,

“We don’t underrate our opponent we want to give them the respect they deserve also as a team,” Osimhen told NFF TV ahead of the first leg at the Moshood Abiola Staduim, Abuja.

In truth, Guinea-Bissau are no pushovers in the ongoing qualifying series. Baciro Cande`s men whipped Sao Tome and Principe 5-1 in the first game of the qualifying series before hold Sierra Leone to a 2-2 draw in Conakry. The Djurtus are placed second in the AFCON qualification group with 4-points, two less than table-toppers Nigeria.

Just like the Eagles who are unbeaten in the group following wins over Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe Guinea-Bissau will attempt an upset of the Eagles to take top spot in the group.

Nigeria defeated Guinea-Bissau in the Group stage of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon and will start as favorites on friday.

All eyes will be on Victor Osimhen to replicate his goal-scoring form at Italian Serie A table-toppers Napoli for Nigeria who will seal 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification with at least 4-points from the possible six vs Guinea-Bissau.

Kick-off for the first leg clash is 5pm Nigerian time on Friday March 24.
