Villarreal condemns attack on disabled supporters
Spanish club Villarreal have condemned the attack on two disabled supporters outside their stadium following Saturday’s La Liga match against Valencia.
The fans were attacked outside the Estadio de la Ceramica after the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
One of the victims plays for Villarreal’s EDI team, which is for players with intellectual disabilities. They spent the night in hospital under observation to “undergo tests for contusions.”
The other supporter suffered a “complete maxillofacial fracture” (a facial bone fracture) and was taken to Castellon General Hospital, where they were still receiving care on Monday morning.
In a statement, Villarreal said: “Villarreal CF would like to reiterate the club’s absolute condemnation and strong rejection of any form of violence, which has no place in football or society. The club offers its support to those affected and has been in constant contact and collaboration with them since the attack.”
Valencia also condemned the incident, saying: “Football does not tolerate violence in any form. Stadiums should be places free of hatred, and the club condemns these actions, which do not represent the core values of sport or the respectful and healthy atmosphere between fans that was evident during the match.”
