Waldrum Expresses Concerns Over World Cup Prospects Amid NFF Interference

Super Falcons’ Head Coach Randy Waldrum has voiced his apprehensions ahead of the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and Australia, following interference by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that aims to hinder the team’s performance.

In an exclusive interview with John Krysinsky on a soccer podcast, Waldrum shed light on the frustrations caused by his employers’ actions.

He disclosed a troubling incident during the WAFCON tournament, where goalkeeper Tochukwue Oluehi, who had spoken out about unpaid allowances, was forced out of the national team by the NFF.

“The players boycotted training ahead of the match against Zambia due to non-payment after the loss in Morocco (WAFCON),” explained Waldrum.

“Tochukwue Oluehi approached the federation about the issue, but they didn’t appreciate her stance, resulting in her dismissal. Later, they allowed her to return on the condition of issuing an apology letter.”

Moreover, Waldrum disclosed the NFF’s demand for him to select a goalkeeper he had never observed or trained with, which he staunchly refused, resulting in further consequences.

“They wanted me to choose a goalkeeper from Nigeria for the World Cup, despite never seeing them or having them attend any of our camps.

“I declined, as my contract explicitly states that I have the authority to select my team. As a result, they retaliated by preventing my assistant coach, Lauren Gregg, from joining the team.”

If you have been following the Super Falcons, you are likely familiar with Lauren Gregg, the dedicated figure constantly providing instructions from the sidelines.

The NFF’s insistence on dropping her, despite her integral role within the team, demonstrates a glaring lack of concern from those in power.

Nigeria already faces the challenge of a difficult group, with slim chances of progressing further. Removing a crucial member of the coaching staff will undoubtedly further diminish Nigeria’s prospects.
