What Austin Eguavoen said about new Super Eagles Coach, Eric Chelle
The Nigerian Football Federation’s (NFF) Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen, has called on Nigerian football fans to rally behind Eric Chelle, the newly appointed head coach of the Super Eagles.
Chelle, who was unveiled during a ceremony at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, takes over from Eguavoen, who had served as interim head coach since the September international break. Eguavoen guided the team through the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, achieving mixed results, including victories against Libya and Benin Republic, draws with Rwanda and Benin, and a disappointing loss to Rwanda in Uyo.
Despite receiving support from top football figures to take on the role permanently, the NFF opted for a foreign coach to lead the Super Eagles into the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Eguavoen appealed to Nigerians to put their full backing behind Chelle for the sake of the national team. “It’s a hot seat,” Eguavoen said, as quoted by Brila FM. “But we should do everything we can to make it as cool as possible. It’s not about me or Eric; it’s about Nigeria and flying our flag at the World Cup in 2026.”
Chelle’s appointment has been met with scepticism, with many fans and journalists questioning his suitability for the role. However, his remarks during the unveiling ceremony won over some doubters. Chelle acknowledged the significant responsibility ahead, stating his belief in the team’s potential to achieve World Cup qualification.
Eguavoen and Chelle had their first meeting before the unveiling, exchanging pleasantries and words of encouragement. This gesture symbolised a seamless transition and a shared commitment to the Super Eagles’ success.
Chelle’s task is clear: secure Nigeria’s place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As the new chapter begins, the message from Eguavoen and other football dignitaries is unambiguous – Nigerians must unite in support of the new coach to ensure the Super Eagles soar to new heights.
