White Sox fan Obama invites Cubs to White House after World Series triumph
United States president Barack Obama set his own allegiances to one side as he invited the Chicago Cubs to the White House in the wake of their momentous World Series triumph.
The Cubs ended their 108-year wait to land the biggest prize in baseball with an 8-7 extra-innings victory over the Cleveland Indians in game seven, clinching a 4-3 series win.
Obama – a fan of the Cubs’ crosstown rivals the Chicago White Sox – is nearing the end of his second term in office, with Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump set to be elected as his successor on November 8.
However, before the removal vans arrive to help move the Obamas on to their new home, the Cubs are set for a presidential reception.

First lady Michelle Obama – a Cubs fan – had earlier tweeted: “Go @Cubs, go! Been rooting for you since I was a kid, and so incredibly proud tonight. #FlytheW – mo.”
The move continues the tradition of World Series champions attending the White House to celebrate their achievements.
