Why Akor Adams may not honour Super Eagles call-up if Invited
Akor Adams’ long-held dream of making his Super Eagles debut could be delayed after Sevilla raised concerns about his fitness. The Nigerian striker, who is recovering from injury, was named in Nigeria’s 39-man squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. However, Sevilla manager García Pimienta has made it clear that Adams must be medically cleared by the club before he can join the national team.
Adams, who joined Sevilla from Montpellier for €5.5 million, has only played nine minutes for the Spanish side due to a myofascial injury. He has resumed light training with Sevilla’s medical staff, but Pimienta insists the player must be 100% fit before he is allowed to return to competitive action.
“If he is not fully fit, he cannot go with the national team,” Pimienta said. “He should first help us here at Sevilla, and once cleared by the medical staff, we can consider his call-up to Nigeria.”
This uncertainty leaves Adams’ participation in the Super Eagles’ qualifiers in doubt. While Nigeria’s new coach, Éric Sékou Chelle, has included him in the preliminary squad, Sevilla is focused on ensuring Adams is fully recovered before allowing him to travel.
