‘ Why I joined Genclerbirligi ‘ – Oghenekaro Etebo

Nigerian midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo has revealed the reasoning behind his decision to join Genclerbirligi, a second-division Turkish club, despite receiving offers from top-flight teams after recovering from a long-term injury.

In a candid interview, Etebo explained that his move was driven by loyalty and gratitude to Genclerbirligi, who supported him during his recovery period. The club had generously offered him access to their training facilities while he was injured, allowing him to train with the team even though he had no obligation to the club at the time.

“A lot of people were calling me, asking, ‘Why would you go to a second-division club in Turkey?’” Etebo shared during an interview with SportsBoom.com. “I answered that the most important thing is to play.”

Etebo’s decision raised eyebrows due to his talent and potential to attract offers from higher-profile teams. However, his connection with Genclerbirligi went beyond football. The club’s unwavering support during his recovery, including covering all his expenses, left a lasting impact on him.

“From January till the end of the season, I didn’t pay for anything, and I trained with the group 100%. Every time, the doctor would say to me, even if it’s six months or one year, you have to wear this jersey because we looked after you,” Etebo recalled.

Despite receiving offers from other clubs in the Turkish and Israeli first divisions, Etebo felt a deep sense of obligation to Genclerbirligi. The club’s modest contract offer and lack of a buy-out clause further demonstrated their genuine support for his career revival.

“They knew I hadn’t played for a year. The money wasn’t that big, but it was just for me to be on the pitch and show that I was back,” Etebo explained.

Etebo also highlighted the club’s history of reviving the careers of players, mentioning fellow Nigerian footballer Isaac Promise, who remains a beloved figure at Genclerbirligi.

With five appearances for the club this season, Etebo is focused on getting back to his best and starting a new chapter in his career.
