Why I think Nigeria will win 2021 AFCON – Gernot Rohr

Gernot Rohr the former coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria has tipped the team to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in an interview.

The Franco-German whose dreams of winning the title with Nigeria was cut short by Riyad Mahrez late free-kick but won a bronze medal in the 2019 gave his reasons.

He mentioned the teams togetherness, efficiency and other things as to why he is confident they will win the 2021 edition.

“Nigeria is for me the favourites to win the AFCON after the group stage. This is the team with the most legs, the most efficient. The team has been built to win for five years,” Rohr told Ouest France.

“They know each other very well. It makes me happy to see them fulfil the contract even if they have to be wary of direct elimination matches, it’s completely different.

“They must be careful not to take the easy way out. I think they can handle the pressure. It’s still a young team but it has maturity.”

Gernot Rohr also mentioned that hosts Cameroon will get to the semifinals since they have the support of the home fans.

“In the selection of Cameroon, there are great players, an important offensive potential. They are at home and they have the support of the public.

“We leave with advantages in these cases. It provides additional strength. I expected them at least in the semi-finals. It’s the minimum.”

Gernot Rohr was sacked few weeks to the start of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and replaced with Augustine Eguavoen on the interim.

Austin Okocha, and Super Eagles players have talked about the great changes they have seen in the team since Augustine Eguavoen took over from Gernot Rohr.
