Why Manchester United Will Pay Chelsea £3.5m After Europa League Final
Manchester United will have to give Chelsea £3.5 million from their £5.5 million earnings after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. This payment is part of a deal made when Mason Mount joined United from Chelsea.
The agreement included a clause that says Chelsea would get extra money if Mount played in a European final. Since Mount was part of the match in Bilbao, United must now pay the agreed amount.
Mount signed for United in 2023 for an initial fee of £55 million, with another £5 million possible in bonuses. One of those bonuses includes payments for achievements like reaching or winning big matches. Chelsea could also earn more if United win the Premier League and Mount plays in at least 70% of games during that season.
The final loss was already a tough moment for United, as it cost them a trophy and a place in the Champions League. Now, this extra payment to Chelsea adds to their financial problems.
United are trying to rebuild under coach Ruben Amorim, and this latest setback highlights the challenges ahead—both on and off the pitch.
