Alvarez wants GGG fight after Smith victory
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez set his sights on a super-fight with Gennady “GGG” Golovkin after claiming the WBO light-middleweight title on Saturday by beating Liam Smith at AT&T Stadium.
Alvarez knocked Smith down three times in a devastating display of superiority and claimed victory in the ninth round when Smith could not rise from the canvas after a brutal body shot.
The Mexican dropped down a weight division to take on British boxer Smith and the 26-year-old now wants to face brilliant Kazakh fighter Golovkin, who beat Kell Brook in London last week.
“He doesn’t want to accept,” Alvarez said of a potential blockbuster meeting with undefeated Golovkin.
“I fear no man. I am the best at this sport. I want to fight the best.
“About a month ago, we offered GGG three or four times as much to make the fight.
“We’re a team. I’m not going to blame my promoter or anyone else. I fear nobody. I’m 26 years old, I’ve fought the best in history and as I’ve already said, I’m the best at this moment in time.”
Smith accepted he had been outclassed by Alvarez on the night, suggesting he took the fight too early in his career.
“If I would have waited a little longer and gotten more experience I would have been able to fight a guy like that better,” Smith said.
“I am very disappointed. Canelo was too good. I needed better timing, my timing was off.”
