How Newcastle United stun Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane

Ayoze Perez scored in stoppage time to hand Newcastle United a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in the Premier League this afternoon.

Tottenham were dominating the action in the opening stages of the contest, with Harry Kane testing Rob Elliot just a couple of minutes after kickoff, but the Newcastle keeper denied the England international.

The home side continued to see the majority of the possession, but struggled to create many openings, with Christian Eriksen putting too much on a cross intended for Daryl Janmaat, before Dele Alli was let down by his first touch. Spurs started to pose more of a threat in the final 15 minutes of the first half though, with Erik Lamela forcing two diving saves from Elliot with swerving efforts from outside the box.

The second of Lamela’s attempts led to the opening goal as the Argentine forced a corner, whipping the ball back into the box for Eric Dier to head past Elliot at the far corner.

Lamela tried to make his presence felt again at the start of the second half, racing down the right before squaring the ball in for Kane, but the striker could not reach the ball in time.

Newcastle soon started to see more of the ball though, and came close to an equaliser when Papiss Cisse latched onto a high ball forward from Moussa Sissoko, but he left himself with a tight angle before slicing the ball just wide. Spurs tried to respond down the other end, with Kane testing Elliot with a long-range effort, but the goalkeeper was able to punch it clear with a relatively comfortable save.

The visitors continued to try to find a way back into the match, as Sissoko set up Cisse for another chance, but the striker’s finish was straight at Lloris, leaving the keeper with an easy save. Newcastle continued to grow in confidence as the second half progressed, and got back on level terms with just over 15 minutes remaining, as Lloris parried a Chancel Mbemba strike to Aleksandar Mitrovic, who scrambled the ball into the back of the net from a couple of yards out just a few moments after coming off the bench in place of Cisse.

Steve McClaren’s side sensed a chance to press for a winner, with Sissoko sprinting down the left before sending a low cross in for Mitrovic, but Toby Alderweireld beat the scorer of the equaliser to the ball. Spurs tried to halt Newcastle’s momentum with a break back down the other end after Danny Rose won the ball back in midfielder, but Son Heung-min blasted his finish well high from the edge of the penalty area.

Mitrovic almost clinched the win for the Magpies in stoppage time, throwing himself at a Sissoko cross, but the substitute could not get anything on the ball.

There was time for one more Newcastle effort though, with Perez sealing all three points for the visitors deep in stoppage time, with Mitrovic flicking the ball in for the Spaniard to slot past Lloris.

The result lifts Newcastle out of the relegation zone and up to 15th in the Premier League table, while Tottenham stay fifth.
