AFCON Fatigue Affects Akinsanmiro in Pisa’s Heavy Loss to Inter – Gilardino

Pisa head coach Alberto Gilardino has blamed Ebenezer Akinsanmiro’s poor performance in the 6–2 defeat to Inter Milan on the midfielder’s recent involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Akinsanmiro, who has been impressive for Pisa this season, played only the first half against his parent club, Inter. The Nigerian midfielder struggled to make his usual impact, lacking energy and control in midfield.
Speaking ahead of Pisa’s league match against Sassuolo, Gilardino said Akinsanmiro is still feeling the physical effects of the AFCON and needs time to return to full fitness.
“He was affected physically by the Africa Cup of Nations. Now he needs to stay calm and get back to his best condition,” the coach said.
Although Akinsanmiro featured in a friendly match against Egypt during the tournament, he did not play in any competitive AFCON game as the Super Eagles went on to win the bronze medal in Morocco. His time away also meant he missed six league matches for Pisa.
Gilardino urged the midfielder to remain patient and focused as he works towards regaining his best form ahead of the home clash at the Stadio Romeo Anconetani.
