Arsenal Fall Short Again as Man City End Quadruple Dream at Wembley

Arsenal saw their hopes of silverware this season suffer a major blow after a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday in Wembley Stadium.

It was meant to be a defining moment for Mikel Arteta’s side, a chance to prove they could finally turn promise into trophies. Instead, it ended in frustration, as a passive display allowed City to take control when it mattered most.

The first half offered little excitement, with both teams cautious and unwilling to take risks. But the game turned just after the hour mark, and it was a moment Arsenal will struggle to forget. Stand-in goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga failed to deal properly with a dangerous cross from Rayan Cherki, allowing Nico O’Reilly to react quickest and head home from close range.

Before Arsenal could recover, City struck again. Cherki was again involved, releasing Matheus Nunes down the flank, whose delivery found O’Reilly in a similar position to double the lead just four minutes later.

For Arsenal, the response never came. They struggled to create chances, sat too deep for long periods, and lacked the urgency expected in a cup final. It was a performance that raised familiar questions about their mentality in decisive moments.

The defeat means Arsenal’s wait for a major trophy stretches to six years, with their last success coming in the FA Cup in 2020. Despite their progress under Arteta, including consistent title challenges, the inability to get over the line in key matches continues to haunt them.

This result also ends any talk of a historic quadruple, a dream that once felt within reach. While they remain in a strong position in the Premier League and are still competing in other competitions, this loss serves as a reminder that potential alone is not enough.

On the other side, Pep Guardiola celebrated his 19th trophy as City manager, with his team delivering a clinical second-half performance that underlined their experience on the big stage.

For Arsenal, attention now turns back to the league, where they still hold a healthy lead. But with City chasing and a crucial meeting still to come, this defeat could linger — not just as a missed opportunity, but as a test of whether this team truly has what it takes to become champions.
