Arsenal Women win women’s Champions Cup
Arsenal Women has won the inaugural Women’s Champions Cup after defeating Corinthians 3–2 in extra time on Sunday, February 1.
The final was played at Emirates Stadium, where Caitlin Foord scored the decisive goal in extra time. Corinthians, the South American champions, force Arsenal to work throughout the match and take the game beyond 90 minutes.
Arsenal reached the final after beating African champions AS FAR in the semi-finals earlier in the week. Corinthians earn their place by overcoming Wuhan Jiangda. Both teams enter the final unbeaten in the competition.
This win secures Arsenal £1.67 million in prize money across the two matches, which is more than the club received for winning the Women’s Champions League last season.
The Women’s Champions Cup brings together champions from six confederations and is held entirely in England. Arsenal qualified as European champions and played both matches on home soil. Arsenal lift the trophy as the first winners of the Women’s Champions Cup.
