BREAKING: Brett Smitheram wins Scrabble world title as Wellington Jighere finishes 23rd

Nigeria’s Wellington Jighere has lost his World Scrabble Championship title to Brett Smitheram. Bret a recruitment consultant from east London beat fellow Briton Mark Nyman in the 2016 final held in Lille, France.

Wellington Jighere who was the 2015 World Champion didn’t perform to his standard has he only managed to finish 23rd, while Dennis Ikekeregor was the best performing Nigerian finishing in 11th place.

Wellington told sportlineng that their late arrival affected them, but he and his team has put the incident behind them.

“The championship has ended. We didn’t do too well,” he said.

When asked if their late arrival affected their perfomances he said:”Sure. Imagine arriving Lille about 15 minutes to the start of game one.”

“Dennis Ikekeregor was the best performing Nigerian finishing in 11th place, I finished 23rd.

“I’ve put it behind me,” he said.
