Brentford Decide Frank Onyeka’s Future as Coventry Lead Transfer Chase

Brentford have taken a clear decision on the future of Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka amid growing interest from several clubs.
The 28-year-old has found regular playing time hard to come by since the start of the 2024/2025 season. He spent last season on loan in Germany with FC Augsburg, where he featured in 31 Bundesliga matches. Onyeka hoped the move would help him secure a place in Brentford’s starting line-up, but he has so far played only six Premier League games this season, without making a single start.
Despite his limited club action, Onyeka impressed for Nigeria at AFCON 2025 in Morocco, where he started four matches. His performances have attracted interest from Coventry City, Valencia and Sheffield United.
Coventry City, managed by Frank Lampard, are currently leading the EFL Championship and are keen to add experienced Premier League players to their squad. The club are believed to be leading the race to sign Onyeka, ahead of Valencia and Sheffield United.
However, negotiations have slowed, with Brentford delaying talks. This has cooled the interest of Valencia and Sheffield United, leaving Coventry as the main contenders.
Onyeka is open to leaving Brentford in search of regular football, and the club have made it clear that he is not part of their long-term plans. His contract runs out next summer, meaning Brentford may look to sell him in either the January or summer transfer window.
Meanwhile, Brentford have enjoyed a solid season under Keith Andrews, sitting eighth in the Premier League with 33 points from 23 matches.
