Fans tear into Super Falcons coach after unprecedented seventh straight defeat
Waldrum leading Super Falcons through worst run in history
Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum is under increasing pressure after his team lost a seventh consecutive match following their 1-0 defeat to Colombia at the ongoing Revelations Cup in Mexico. Nigerian football fans have begun to call for his sack after another underwhelming performance.
Super Falcons lost their opener against Mexico three days ago before an early goal from teenage Colombian forward Linda Caicedo settled the contest between both sides yesterday. In the immediate aftermath, fans all over social media began to call out the American coach once more.
The Nigerian fans have long taken pride in the performances of the Super Falcons, a side that has been known to dominate African football. The first signs of discontent with the manager came when Nigeria failed to pick up a medal at the 2022 Women’s AFCON, finishing fourth behind South Africa, Morocco and Zambia. Since then, the Falcons have lost all their friendlies in preparation for this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have now lost seven on the bounce for the first time in the history of the team. The team has scored only two goals and conceded 12 in that time, despite having some of the best players in African football.
Nigeria lost on penalties to Morocco in the WAFCON semifinal before losing 1-0 to Zambia in the third-place match. The Falcons then lost twice to the USA, 4-0 and 2-1, before losing 2-0 to Japan. At the Revelations Cup, the side have lost both of their games so far, with a third game against Costa Rica still to come.
Many fans are of the opinion that Waldrum, who was appointed from the USA’s College soccer system, should be let go from the position. With the World Cup on the horizon and the team looking poorer with every game, maybe the time has come for the manager to be relieved of his duties.
