Flying Eagles get DIFFICULT U-20 AFCON group stage draw
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been drawn in a tough group for the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following the official draw by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The seven-time champions will compete in Group B against Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco in what is being called the tournament’s ‘Group of Death.’ All three opponents are strong teams with past success in youth football.
Morocco, champions in 1997, and Egypt, three-time winners in 1991, 2003, and 2013, bring plenty of experience to the group. South Africa, though yet to win the title, were runners-up in 1997 and remain a competitive side at this level.
Despite the challenge, Nigeria will be confident of progressing. The Flying Eagles are the most successful team in U20 AFCON history but have not won the trophy since 2015. They will be determined to reclaim their place at the top.
Their recent performances suggest they are ready for the challenge. The team won the WAFU B regional title last year, defeating Ghana 3-1 in the final. This victory has boosted confidence as they prepare for the AFCON campaign.
Nigeria will also face Egypt in two friendly matches later this month. These games will provide a good opportunity to test their strength before the tournament begins.
In other groups, hosts Côte d’Ivoire are in Group A alongside DR Congo, Tanzania, Ghana, and a yet-to-be-confirmed UNIFAC team. Meanwhile, defending champions Senegal are in Group C with 2017 winners Zambia, debutants Sierra Leone, and Kenya.
The 2025 U20 AFCON will take place from 26 April to 18 May and will serve as a qualification event for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. The four semi-finalists will earn a spot at the global tournament.
With a difficult group ahead, the Flying Eagles must be at their best to reach the knockout stages and aim for their first U20 AFCON title in 10 years.
