Maresca Praises Professional Display and Hails Academy Stars After Chelsea Win In Poland

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca was full of praise for his team after their 3-0 win over Legia Warsaw in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League quarter-final on Wednesday night.

Speaking after the match, Maresca described the performance as “professional” and highlighted how well the team adapted, especially in the second half. He also took time to celebrate young players Tyrique George and Josh Acheampong for their contributions.

“It was a good result in the end,” Maresca said. “We planned the match carefully – making sure our key players were fresh – and I think overall it was a solid, professional performance. We were much better in the second half, which was important.”

Maresca stressed the need for Chelsea to learn how to play against different types of opponents, especially teams like Legia who defend deep. “When teams sit back, there’s less space. You have to move the ball quicker, take more risks, and try shots from outside the box. That’s how we got our first goal – Tyrique reacted quickly to a rebound. These are the kinds of moments we must create more often.”

The Chelsea boss was particularly pleased for teenager Tyrique George, who scored his first senior goal for the club. “I’m very happy for him and also for the academy. He took responsibility and was brave on the ball.”

However, it was Josh Acheampong who truly impressed Maresca. “Tonight, I fell in love with Josh,” he smiled. “Since the beginning, I’ve seen great potential in him. He can play anywhere – full-back, midfield, central defence – and he performs well in each position. That’s the sign of a top player. He’s always willing to learn and that attitude is fantastic.”

On the atmosphere in Warsaw, Maresca said he had expected a passionate crowd. “It’s a privilege to play in this kind of environment. I told the players before the game – enjoy it, because not every game feels like this.”

Maresca also clarified that Cole Palmer’s substitution at half-time was pre-planned, not due to injury. “We had already decided he and Tosin would play just 45 minutes. There’s no issue.”

As for Christopher Nkunku, who saw his penalty saved, Maresca said the striker is simply going through a rough patch. “At the moment, it’s probably a lack of confidence. He’s missed some chances, but the important thing is he’s still working hard every day. That’s how he’ll get back to his best.”

Chelsea now take a commanding lead into the second leg at Stamford Bridge on 17 April, with the final set to be played in Poland on 28 May.
