‘My wife says I am fat’ – Peseiro reveals reasons behind animated sideline presence during AFCON
Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro has disclosed the two main reasons behind his animated presence on the sidelines during Nigeria’s matches in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Despite facing off-field challenges and harsh criticisms, the Portuguese tactician has steered Nigeria to the semifinals of the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, with the team just two wins away from clinching the title.
Throughout the tournament, Peseiro has been actively engaged in the matches, standing up, giving directions, and gesturing constantly.
When questioned about why he doesn’t take a seat to rest during games, Peseiro admitted that staying on his feet helps him shed a few kilograms, a fact that pleases his wife.
Peseiro also emphasized that his animated presence on the sideline is not a new practice and has become a habit. He sees it as an essential part of his coaching style, allowing him to communicate effectively with his players.
In his words, Peseiro stated, “If you know me, I’m like that on the bench. My wife says I’m fat and, if I’m standing up, I can lose four or five kilos, and she’ll be happier.
Then, because I’m an interventionist coach, even though the players sometimes don’t listen to me.”
As Peseiro’s Super Eagles prepare to face South Africa for a spot in the AFCON final, his animated touchline presence continues to be a defining characteristic of his coaching style.
