Nigeria appoints Former NBA Coach David Fizdale as new D’Tigers Head Coach
David Fizdale has officially been appointed as the new head coach of D’Tigers by the Nigeria Basketball Federation.
The former NBA coach takes over at an important time for Nigerian basketball, with the team preparing for qualification campaigns for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games.
Fizdale brings more than two decades of NBA coaching experience. He spent eight years with the Miami Heat, helping the franchise win NBA championships in 2012 and 2013 during the era of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
He later became head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies and the New York Knicks, leading Memphis to the NBA playoffs in 2017. Most recently, he worked with the Phoenix Suns as an assistant coach.
Speaking after accepting the role, Fizdale said former D’Tigers coach Mike Brown played a key role in bringing him to Nigeria.
“I’m very excited. I have Mike Brown to thank,” Fizdale said.
“He brought the opportunity to me, and after several conversations and plenty of back-and-forth, we agreed that I would take on the challenge of helping the team qualify.”
D’Tigers remain one of Africa’s most respected basketball teams. Nigeria won its first AfroBasket title in 2015 and has qualified for three Olympic Games. The team also made global headlines in 2021 after defeating the United States in a pre-Olympic exhibition game.
Fizdale replaces Mohammed Abdulrahman and is expected to begin his tenure during the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African qualifiers.
Nigeria currently sit third in Group C after winning one of their opening three qualification games.
The federation hopes Fizdale’s appointment will help improve coaching standards and player development as Nigeria continues its push to compete consistently at the highest level of international basketball.
