NPFL Sends Two Trophies to Lagos, Port Harcourt Ahead of Final-Day Title Battle

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has confirmed that two league trophies will be ready ahead of Sunday’s final round of matches as Rangers International F.C. and Rivers United F.C. battle for the 2025/26 league title.
The league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, revealed the plans as excitement continues to build for what promises to be a thrilling end to the season.
League leaders Rangers will travel to Lagos to take on Ikorodu City F.C. at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, while Rivers United will host Katsina United F.C. in Port Harcourt.
This will be the first time in more than 10 years that the NPFL title race under the regular league format will be settled on the final day of the season, increasing tension among supporters across the country.
Speaking during a radio interview, Owumi explained that identical trophies had already been sent to both Lagos and Port Harcourt to ensure an immediate presentation after the final whistle.
“We do not have a replica trophy. We have two trophies. One trophy will be in Lagos and the other in Port Harcourt,” Owumi said.
He also confirmed that presentation stages and celebration arrangements had been prepared in both cities.
“We already have a podium in Lagos, while the one in Port Harcourt is being arranged. Everything available in Lagos will also be available in Port Harcourt. Wherever the title is decided, we are fully ready,” he added.
The move is similar to what is done in major European leagues, where organisers prepare for trophy presentations in different venues when more than one club still has a chance of winning the title on the final day.
Eight-time champions Rangers are hoping to lift another league crown, while Rivers United are aiming to win back the title after an impressive season campaign.
The last major final-day title battle in Nigerian top-flight football happened during the 2023 Super Six playoffs, when Enyimba F.C. won their record ninth league title in Lagos.
