Rivers United to earn over ₦1 billion after reaching CAF Champions League group stage

Rivers United are set for a huge payday after booking their place in the CAF Champions League group stage, ending Nigeria’s seven-year wait for a team to reach that level of the competition.

The Port Harcourt side, known as the “Pride of Rivers,” sealed their qualification by defeating Mozambique’s Black Bulls 3–2 on aggregate.

The victory makes Rivers United Nigeria’s only club still in continental competition this season after Kwara United, Abia Warriors, and Remo Stars were all knocked out earlier.

Big financial reward for Rivers United

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), every club that reaches the group stage of the Champions League will receive $700,000 (about ₦1.03 billion).

This cash reward will give Rivers United a big boost as they prepare for the next round, helping them strengthen their squad and cover travel and operational costs.

Since 2017, Rivers United have earned around $2.65 million (₦4.2 billion) from CAF competitions, showing steady progress in African football.

Finidi praises his team’s resilience

Head coach Finidi George praised his players for their hard work and determination, especially after a tense second-leg performance.

“They fought until the end and showed great character,” Finidi said. “We defended too deep at times, but we kept our Champions League dream alive.”

Now, with qualification secured, Rivers United will aim to make a strong impression in the group stage, as they carry Nigeria’s hopes in Africa’s biggest club competition.
