Harry Kane was at his mercurial best for Tottenham Hotspur as they picked up an impressive 3-2 win away from home against Premier League champions Manchester City to complete the league double over the Cityzens.
Tottenham Hotspur started their era under Antonio Conte brilliantly, but had stumbled badly in recent weeks, losing thrice in a row in the league to Chelsea, Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Manchester City came into the game on the back of a good run of form in which they won four games on the bounce, conceding only one goal in all of those games.
Tottenham Hotspur stunned the Etihad Stadium into silence in the opening minutes as on-loan Swedish winger Dejan Kulusevski popped up to tap a low cross from Heung-Min Son home from close range following a fast break in the fourth minute of the encounter.
Manchester City came close to levelling the scoreline on a number of occasions, with Ilkay Gundogan, in particular, hitting the post from outside the box.
The champions eventually drew themselves level, and it came as a gift in the 33rd minute. A cross from Bernardo Silva was caught and dropped by Hugo Lloris under pressure from Kevin De Bruyne, leaving Gundogan with the simple task of sticking the ball into the back of the net.
Harry Kane put the visitors in front in the 59th minute after brilliant play from the England captain.
Kane received the ball on the halfway line and held off a marker before sending it across the pitch to Heung-Min Son, who waited for Kane to arrive in the box before sending a well-timed pass into the path of the Englishman, who took a touch before firing one into the top corner.
Kane thought he had put the icing on the cake for Tottenham when he fired home from inside the box, only for the flag to go up for an offside in the buildup to the goal.
Manchester City thought they had rescued a point at the death when Bernardo Silva’s shot struck the arm of Cristian Romero in added time, and Riyad Mahrez stepped up to slot the penalty home for them.
Kane had the final say in the clash when he rose highest to head home a brilliant cross from Kulusevski in the 95th minute to send the entire Spurs team and officials into raptures.
The win from Tottenham has put them back in the race for a top four finish, and Manchester City have now lost a Premier League match for the first time since October. The Cityzens lead at the top of the Premier League has been cut to six points, and they have played one game more than their nearest rivals Liverpool.
