Why Kenneth Omeruo will not consider playing in the NPFL before retirement

Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has ruled out a return to play in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), citing personal preferences and the lack of a top-flight club in his hometown of Abuja.

Speaking during a live session on X (formerly Twitter), co-hosted with fellow Nigerian internationals Wilfred Ndidi and Asisat Oshoala, Omeruo shared his thoughts on his future in Nigerian football.

“I don’t think I will come back to play in the NPFL. I grew up in Abuja, and they don’t have a club playing in the top flight. Right now, I can’t go back to Akure either. I don’t see myself returning to the Nigerian league to play,” he explained.

While ruling out a playing return, Omeruo expressed a strong interest in scouting and developing talent from the NPFL. He emphasised his passion for helping young players reach their potential, highlighting the quality present in the league.

“There was a time when the league had an app for streaming games, and I shared the link with my agent and others because I knew the quality we had in the NPFL,” he said.

Omeruo’s remarks come amid the presence of prominent Nigerian players like Ahmed Musa, Shehu Abdullahi, and Brown Ideye, who have returned to the NPFL in recent years. However, his focus remains on identifying and nurturing future stars rather than making a personal comeback.
