World no 1 caps 2016 with a knighthood – All hail Sir Andy Murray

What a way to end a wonderful year for Andy Murray.

The world number one’s remarkable and trophy-laden 2016 season has been capped by a knighthood in the New Year Honours List.

Murray took his game to a new level this year, climbing to the top of the rankings and dethroning Novak Djokovic after winning the ATP World Tour Finals in London.

The 29-year-old Scotsman – who was previously honoured with an OBE in 2012 – successfully defended his Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro, having claimed a second Wimbledon crown.

And Murray – who became a father in February – was among an elite group of British sport stars to be recognised by the Queen.

Athletics star and Olympic champion Mo Farah, 33, also received a knighthood.

Farah completed a ‘double-double’ in Rio after he won his fourth Olympic gold medal, becoming the only man to retain the 5,000 metres and 10,000m titles.

“I’m so happy to be awarded this incredible honour from the country that has been my home since I moved here at the age of eight,” he said.

“Looking back at the boy who arrived here from Somalia, not speaking any English, I could never have imagined where I would be today – it’s a dream come true. I’m so proud to have had the opportunity to race for my country and win gold medals for the British people, who have been my biggest supporters throughout my career.

“My successes have only been possible because of their support and the commitment, sacrifices and love of my amazing family and the team around me now and over the years.”

Meanwhile, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katherine Grainger were made dames.
