CAF Fines and Suspends Samuel Eto’o After AFCON Quarter-Final Incident

Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), has been fined and suspended by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following Cameroon’s 2-0 quarter-final defeat to hosts Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations.
CAF said Eto’o was punished for “misconduct” linked to his reaction to refereeing decisions during the match. The statement did not mention any specific incidents.
During the game, Eto’o was widely seen gesturing angrily towards his Moroccan counterpart, Fouzi Lekjaa, while CAF president Patrice Motsepe watched nearby. The match was tense, with several heated moments on the pitch, including jostling and verbal exchanges between players over perceived poor officiating.
CAF said it is investigating violent confrontations and disorderly behaviour at matches in the tournament, including the Morocco vs Cameroon game.
As a result of its findings, Eto’o has been banned from CAF competitions for four matches and fined $20,000. The suspension prevents him from officially participating in matches during this period.
CAF added that the decision is part of wider efforts to maintain discipline and protect the integrity of African football. Further sanctions could follow depending on the outcome of ongoing investigations.
