CAF Launches Investigation into Libya-Nigeria Crisis

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into the conflict between Libya and Nigeria, following the poor treatment of the Super Eagles upon their arrival in Libya.

The Super Eagles were set to face the Mediterranean Knights in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D qualifier on Matchday 4. However, the encounter appears to have been cancelled due to the alleged mistreatment of the Nigerian delegation.

CAF disclosed that it began an investigation on Monday, confirming communication with both the Nigerian and Libyan authorities regarding the issue.

In a statement, CAF expressed concern over the incident:

“The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘Super Eagles’) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities.”

The football governing body stressed that the issue has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for further investigation.

“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation, and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations,” the statement added.

The fallout from the incident may have severe implications for the Libyan football authorities, especially if found guilty of breaching CAF rules. CAF has committed to taking necessary action once investigations are completed.

The Super Eagles, now back in Nigeria, expressed their disappointment over the treatment received, with captain William Troost-Ekong lamenting the ordeal. The team has shifted its focus to upcoming matches, aiming to continue their AFCON 2025 qualification journey under better circumstances.
