Chelle Defends Tactics as Super Eagles Eye Maximum Points Against Uganda

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has defended his tactical decisions at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, saying Nigeria remain fully focused on completing a clean sweep of Group C ahead of their final group match against Uganda.

Nigeria have already qualified for the round of 16 after winning their first two matches. They opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania before securing a dramatic 3-2 win against Tunisia. These results placed the Super Eagles top of the group with six points.

Chelle’s decisions during the final stages of the Tunisia match came under scrutiny after Tunisia mounted a late comeback from 3-0 down.

The Nigerian coach rejected suggestions that his substitutions weakened the team, explaining that Tunisia’s first goal came before any changes were made.

“We conceded the first goal before the substitution,” Chelle said. “We played in a 4-4-2 diamond, which gives freedom to the fullbacks. The pressure was on us, so you have to protect the wingers.”

Looking ahead to the Uganda game, Chelle said rotation could be considered, but keeping intensity and a winning mentality remains the priority as Nigeria target maximum points in the group.

“There are players in this group who deserve to be in this team for this game and the other games. To win something, it’s not just about 11 players; it’s about the group,” he said.

The coach also highlighted Nigeria’s attacking strength while stressing the need for defensive discipline.

“You want a clean sheet, but I am pleased with the goals we score. Of course, we want to win, and I have to find the best way for my team,” Chelle added.

He confirmed there are no major injury concerns ahead of the Uganda match, with only minor fitness issues within the squad, as the Super Eagles aim to maintain momentum heading into the knockout stages.
