Egypt 2019: Chukwueze, Ekong fire Nigeria past South Africa into semifinal

A goal either half from Samuel Chukwueze and William Troost-Ekong ensured the Super Eagles of Nigeria secure a 2-1 win against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the quarter-final of the 2019 AFCON.

The Villarreal attacker opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 27th minute after he pounced on Alex Iwobi’s cut back pass to put Eagles in front.

South Africa pulled one back in the second half when Bongani Zungu powered home from a free kick, the officials consulted the VAR before confirming the goal.

Gernot Rohr pulled out Ahmed Musa for Simon Moses, from Moses’ corner Eagles got the winning goal when unmarked William Troost-Ekong tapped in the goal in the 89th minutes for the winner.

Nigeria will now play the winners of the clash between Algeria and Ivory Coast in the semifinal.
