Fight Erupts at National Sports Festival Kickboxing Venue Amid Officiating Controversy
Tensions boiled over at the Baptist High School, Abeokuta, venue for the kickboxing events of the 22nd National Sports Festival, as a women’s bout between Edo and Bayelsa states sparked chaos over alleged unfair officiating on May 29, 2025.
The heated match ended in controversy when the Edo State fighter was declared the winner, prompting immediate outrage from the Bayelsa team, who accused the officials of bias and unjust officiating. The atmosphere quickly degenerated into a rowdy scene, with a Bayelsa official storming the officials’ corner, scattering recording equipment and threatening physical violence.
SportsRations’ reporter Nsikakabasi Akpan reports that the bout had been fiercely contested, but it was the decision of the judges that triggered the fury. The situation escalated to the point that security operatives had to intervene to prevent further disruption and ensure the safety of athletes, officials, and spectators.
The President of the Kickboxing Federation swiftly intervened, ordering all athletes and coaches out of the auditorium. The remaining matches for the day were concluded behind closed doors to prevent further incidents.
Sources within the Federation hinted that investigations would be launched into the officiating of the disputed bout, while disciplinary action may follow for those involved in the altercation.
The National Sports Festival, intended to foster unity and sportsmanship among states will end today in Ogun State.
