‘No Herve Renard contact’ – NFF reacts to reports

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has refuted recent reports claiming they have initiated discussions with Herve Renard regarding the vacant Super Eagles coaching position.

Speculations emerged earlier this week suggesting that the NFF had begun talks with the Frenchman, who currently coaches the French women’s national team and is expected to leave his role after the 2024 Olympic Games.

A senior official from the NFF clarified the situation, stating, “This report is inaccurate. We’ve not contacted Renard or his representatives.”

Herve Renard, known for his success in African football, notably led Zambia to victory in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and repeated the feat with Cote d’Ivoire in 2015. The 55-year-old coach has expressed interest in returning to coaching in Africa.

Following Finidi George’s resignation from the Super Eagles coaching position, the NFF has been actively seeking a suitable replacement. Among the candidates reportedly under consideration is former Cameroon coach Antonio Conceicao.

The primary objective for the NFF is to appoint a coach capable of guiding the Super Eagles through the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to secure Nigeria’s return to the global stage after missing out on the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

The search for the new Super Eagles head coach continues, with the NFF aiming to finalize the appointment before the team’s qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to commence in September.
