Senegalese Referee Issa Sy to officiate Nigeria vs Angola AFCON quarter-final
Senegalese official Issa Sy has been appointed as the referee for the Nigeria vs Angola Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quater-final clash on Friday at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan.
Sy will be assisted by compatriots Djibril Camara and Nouha Bangoura as assistant referee 1 and assistant referee 2, respectively. Additionally, Mauritanian official Abdel Aziz Bouh will serve as the fourth official, and Modibo Samake from Mali will act as the reserve assistant referee.
Ahmad Nazeer Hossen Bowud from Mauritius and Ali Mohamed Ahmed from Somalia will play the roles of commissioner and referee assessor, respectively, adding to the diverse panel overseeing the match.
The fixture, scheduled to kick off by 6 pm (Nigeria time), marks a rare occasion of the two nations, Nigeria and Angola. While Nigeria historically edged out Angola in the qualification series for the 1990 FIFA World Cup, the Angolans gained a historic victory during the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification series.
The winner of the Nigeria vs Angola clash will advance to the semi-finals and face the victor between Cape Verde’s Blue Sharks and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake. The stakes are high as the teams vie for a coveted spot in the AFCON finals.
