Sergio Busquets to Retire After MLS Playoffs

Inter Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the season. The 37-year-old shared the emotional message on social media, confirming rumours that had been going around in recent weeks. His contract with Inter Miami ends in December.

Busquets has played 69 league games for the club and helped them win two trophies – the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield.

A Legendary Career

Before joining Inter Miami, Busquets had a brilliant career at FC Barcelona. He made 722 appearances for the Spanish club, winning nine La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League trophies.

With the Spain national team, he played 143 times and was part of the squad that won the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

‘I Retire Happy and Grateful’

In his message, Busquets said he felt the time was right to stop playing football.

“It’s been an incredible journey,” he wrote. “I feel the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer. It’s been nearly 20 years of living the dream. These will be my final months on the pitch. I retire happy, fulfilled, and, above all, grateful. Thank you all – see you soon.”

What’s Next for Inter Miami?

Inter Miami still have five games left in the regular MLS season. They have already qualified for the playoffs and are hoping to finish higher in the table. They are currently third in the Eastern Conference, five points behind leaders Philadelphia Union, and have two games in hand.
