UFC 285: Jon Jones defeats Cyril Gane to become undisputed champion

UFC great becomes eighth person to win titles in different divisions

Jon Jones made light work of UFC World Heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane, snatching his belt from him in their bout at UFC 285. The UFC legend wasted no time in asserting his dominance as one of the sport’s greatest ever in his win.

Jones won his first UFC title in 2011 as a light heavyweight and retained the title for a record 11 title fights, establishing his greatness at the level. He was also the youngest champion in the history of the sport, having won his first title aged only 23. He was stripped of his belt in 2015 after he committed a felony and he vacated the light heavyweight belt in 2020.

His return to the UFC was a big deal as he moved up a weight class to the heavyweight division. Jones, however, treated Gane like a novice as he needed only two minutes to win their bout with a first-round guillotine submission, securing invincibility by winning the world heavyweight title. He becomes one of only eight fighters in UFC history to win titles in two different divisions.

After winning the first ten fights of his career, Gane has now lost to Francis Ngannou and Jones, two of his last three opponents. He lost the fight despite Israel Adesanya predicting a win for him against Jones.

Jon Jones announced after the match that he looked forward to a fight with Stipe Miocic, regarded as the greatest heavyweight in UFC history. The fight will be a blockbuster between two greats, and maybe one of the biggest fights in UFC history.
