Ahmed Musa returns to Super Eagles
Ahmed Musa will captain Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the upcoming Unity Cup in London, marking his return to the national team after being left out of for a while now.
Kano Pillars confirmed on Monday that their star player, who has been in good form this season, will headline the Nigerian squad for the four-nation tournament, taking place from 26 to 31 May 2025 at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium.
In a statement, the club said: “Captain Ahmed Musa is set to lead the Super Eagles at the Unity Cup 4-Nations Tourney from May 26–31, 2025, at Brentford Stadium, London.”
Musa, who was overlooked by head coach Eric Chelle for Nigeria’s March qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, is now back in the squad and expected to play a key role in the summer competition.
The Unity Cup returns for the first time since 2004, when it was held at The Valley and Nigeria emerged as champions. This year, four teams will take part — Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Nigeria will face Ghana on Wednesday, 28 May, while Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago will play the first semi-final on Tuesday, 27 May. The final and third-place match will take place on Saturday, 31 May.
Musa’s recall is seen as a major boost for the Super Eagles. The 32-year-old forward is Nigeria’s most capped player with 110 appearances and 18 goals. He made history as the first Nigerian to score more than once in a World Cup match and the first to score in two different tournaments — against Argentina in 2014 and Iceland in 2018.
Since making his debut in 2010, Musa has played a vital role in Nigerian football. He helped Nigeria win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, secured third place in 2019, and finished as runner-up in the 2023 edition in Cote d’Ivoire.
Though he hasn’t featured for the national team since the AFCON final in February, Musa has been in fine form in the Nigeria Premier Football League, scoring eight goals and providing two assists for Kano Pillars this season.
