Alex Iwobi nominated for September EPL player of the month award

Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi has been nominated for the English Premier League player of the month of September award .

The Nigerian midfielder has been one of few positives in Everton’s struggling start to the 2022/2023 season .

His assist for Neil Maupay to bag the clubs first win of the season vs West Ham on Sunday a testimony of his impact to the Toffees thus far.

Alex Iwobi is joined on the shortlist by Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, Bournemouth’s Philip Billing, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey.

Iwobi has assisted three of Everton’s last four goals this season and was named Man of the match in the win over West Ham to halt the Merseyside outfits winless start to the campaign .

Iwobi’s nomination for the September player of the month award is a massive recognition of his exhilarating turnaround from one of Everton’s most under appreciated players to a fan favourite since Frank Lampard’s arrival at the club.

If he wins the award, Alex Iwobi will become the fifth Nigerian winner of the English Premier League player of the month award .

Austin Okocha was the first Nigerian to win the award in November 2003 for his breathtaking displays with Bolton Wanderers .

Seven years later, Osaze Odenwinge won the first of his three awards in September 2010 , a second in April 2011 and the third in February 2012 .

Odion Ighalo became the third Nigerian winner of the award in December 2015 while representing Watford FC .

Kelechi Iheanacho is the last Nigerian winner of the award , the Leicester City forward was crowned EPL player of the month for March 2021 .

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland won August edition of the EA Sports powered EPL player of the month award but is not on the shortlist for September 2022 .

Alex Iwobi is currently on international duty with the Super Eagles of Nigeria in preparation for the international friendly game against Algeria on Tuesday September 27 .
