Godswill Akpabio United FC debuts in Akwa Ibom, aims for NNL success

A new football club, Godswill Akpabio United Football Club, has been launched in Akwa Ibom State, adding to the number of teams in the state.

The club is registered with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and will is eyeing a spot to compete in the 2024/2025 Nigerian National League (NNL). When registered the new team will join Dakkada FC and Vandrezzer FC as the third NNL team from Akwa Ibom.

Godswill Akpabio United FC is expected to use the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium as their home ground. The stadium has a rich history in local football, having previously hosted NNL matches involving Cofine FC and Ibom Youths FC.

During a recent courtesy visit to the Akwa Ibom State Football Association at the Uyo Township Stadium, the club’s General Manager, Mr. Kufre Inima, emphasised that the team’s formation is aimed at fostering unity among Akwa Ibom youths and showcasing hidden football talents to both national and international audiences. Inima highlighted the club’s ambition to qualify for the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) next season.

“Our goal is to galvanize unity and love among Akwa Ibom youths while exposing local talent to the national and international spotlight. We aim to work in synergy with the State FA and earn promotion to the NPFL by the end of the season,” said Inima.

In response, the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State FA, Mr. Samuel Umoh, lauded the initiative, expressing the association’s support for all teams affiliated with the State FA. He encouraged Godswill Akpabio United FC to recruit quality players for their campaign and pledged to offer the necessary assistance to ensure their success in the NNL.

The meeting was attended by several members of the State FA board, marking the start of what many hope will be a prosperous journey for the newly formed Godswill Akpabio United FC as they prepare for their debut season.

This team is named after Nigeria’s Senate President, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio.
