La Liga Matchday 17 recap: Vini, Modric star in Madrid derby win, Barca drop points

Real Madrid continue their push for the 2021-22 La Liga title with another emphatic display in their 2-0 win against local rivals Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Los Blancos put up a fantastic display in all departments to secure the win at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in their La Liga matchday 17 fixture.

A spectacular volley by Karim Benzema from a beautiful cut back from Vini Jnr gave Madrid the 1-0 lead against run of play.

Another beautiful team play scored by Asensio and assisted by Vini Jnr. gave Madrid the second goal in the second half.

Madrid controlled the game in the midfield with the help of Luka Modric and Thibaut Courtois made a couple of saves to keep the home team in the game.

Osasuna and Barcelona played a 2-2 draw in their fixtures. Gavi opened the scoring for Barcelona but David Garcia pulled back for the home team.

Abdessamad Ezzalzouli gave Barcelona the lead but Chimy Avila pulled back for Osasuna. The 2-2 draw meant another points dropped for Barcelona who are currently 8th on the log with 24 points from 16 games.

Early league leaders, Real Sociedad continued their poor run of form suffering a 4-0 loss at Real Betis.

Jasper Cillessen was the hero as Valencia secured a 2-1 win against Elche. Samuel Chukwueze was in action as Villarreal beat Rayo Vallecano 2-0.

Thomas Delaney goal gifted Sevilla a lucky win against wasteful Bilbao.

At the end of round 17, Real Madrid sit top of the table with 42 points from 17 games, Sevilla 2nd with 34 points from 16 games.

Betis 33 points from 17 games and Atletico 29 points from 16 games.
