Nigerian Winger Akinkunmi Amoo released by Omonia Nicosia
Nigerian winger Akinkunmi Amoo has faced another setback in his career as his contract with Cypriot First Division side Omonia Nicosia has been terminated.
The 21-year-old Abuja-born winger joined Omonia Nicosia in the summer of 2023 on a free transfer after being involved in a sex scandal at Danish side Copenhagen.
Amoo’s journey to Omonia Nicosia was seen as a fresh start after facing legal issues and serving a one-year prison sentence over sexual assault charges in Denmark. His troubles began when Danish authorities filed criminal charges against him in April, July, and August of 2022, leading to his arrest on September 10. Despite being released on bail on October 7th, he was found guilty and convicted, resulting in a one-year prison sentence.
His career with Copenhagen came to an abrupt halt as he had not played for the club since July of the previous year. However, Omonia Nicosia offered him an opportunity, but the club has now decided to part ways with him for unspecified “personal reasons.”
The announcement of Amoo’s contract termination was made by Omonia Nicosia through their social media channels. In a brief statement written in Greek, the club thanked Amoo for his cooperation and wished him the best in his career.
Amoo’s future in professional football remains uncertain following the termination of his contract with Omonia Nicosia.
