Omoyele the matchwinner, Iwuala unplayable as Enyimba secure comeback win over Setif
NPFL giants go top of CAF Confederation Cup group
Enyimba bounced back from a 2-1 defeat in South Africa at the hands of Orlando Pirates in their Matchday 2 fixture of the CAF Confederation Cup by winning 2-1 against Algerian side, ES Setif at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.
The visitors took the game to Enyimba and were duly rewarded in the 13th minute when Monsef Bakrar opened the scoring for them, stunning the home crowd into silence. Enyimba were awarded a penalty which captain Austin Oladapo took, but it was well saved by the ES Setif goalkeeper. Enyimba defender, Nelson Ogbonnaya headed an effort against the upright as well as the home side looked for an equaliser. The equaliser eventually came from the captain, Oladapo who rifled home an effort from outside the box in the 40th minute to draw his side level with his third goal in the competition this season. Enyimba completed their comeback through Tosin Omoyele midway through the second half. Two-cap Super Eagle, Anayo Iwuala showed brilliant footwork to evade the attention of six Setif players on the edge of their box and laid the ball on a plate for an unmarked Omoyele to slot it past the keeper for his first goal in the competition this season. Iwuala thought he had won a penalty late on when he was upended in the opposition box, only for the referee from Djibouti to book him for simulation as Enyimba closed out the game.
The People’s Elephant have a 100% home record on the continent this season, having won both their games. They sit atop the group on 6 points with Orlando Pirates and Al Ahli Benghazi yet to face off in their match. Their attentions now turn to the league where they face Rangers International in an Oriental derby on Wednesday in Enugu.
