Taiwo Awoniyi’s 8th league goal hands Die Eisernen Berlin bragging rights

Taiwo Awoniyi was on target as Union Berlin secured a 2-0 win against Hertha Berlin in a Bundesliga game at the Alte Foersterei on Saturday.

The 24-year-old striker who was overlooked by coach Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr for a 32-year-old Saudi-based striker Odion Ighalo, showed a glimpse of what he could offer.

The former Liverpool forward opened the scoring as early as 8th minute when he capitalised on a defensive mistake to fire low left with his right foot.

It became two for the home side in the 30th minute when Christopher Trimmel scored from a well played corner kick.

Taiwo Awoniyi was subbed off for Sheraldo Becker in the 80th minute but his contribution was enough to earn Union Berlin the derby win against Hertha Berlin.

He has now scored 8 league goals in 12 league games with only Roberto Lewandoswki (14) and Erling Haaland (9) have more goals than the Nigerian.
