HEARTBREAK for Nigeria as 4x400m Women’s relay team fail to qualify for 2024 Olympics
Nigeria’s women’s 4x400m team has faced heartbreak as they missed out on qualifying for the Paris Olympic Games. SportsRation reports.
Despite clinching the gold medal at the African Championships in Douala, the team did not secure a spot in Paris.
The quartet, consisting of Ella Onojuvwevwo, Patience Okon, Esther Elo Joseph, and Omolara Ogunmakinju, clocked a time of 3:27.31, reclaiming their championship title from South Africa, who had won it two years ago in Mauritius. Omolara Ogunmakinju notably led Nigeria to a mixed 4x400m African Games title in Ghana.
Despite their victory over rivals Botswana and Zambia, the team needed to surpass Cuba’s time of 3:26.08 to secure the last qualifying spot on the world list at 16th place. Unfortunately, their efforts fell short of this mark.
Nigeria’s exclusion from this event means the country is now out of two relay events for the Olympics. However, hopes for a medal in Paris remain with the mixed 4x400m, women’s 4x100m, and men’s 4x400m relay teams.
