Heartland FC Coach Christian Obi who died in tragic team bus accident laid to Rest in Owerri
The football community came together today to bid farewell to Coach Christian Obi, who was laid to rest in Owerri, Imo State on Friday, October 25, 2025, following his tragic death in a road accident.
Obi, a revered figure in Nigerian football, lost his life in a fatal accident involving the Heartland FC team bus while en route to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, for a pre-season tournament.
Heartland FC’s media officer, had confirmed Obi’s death in a statement, expressing the club’s grief over the loss of their coach.
“With sadness in our hearts and total submission to the will of God, Heartland FC announces the death of Christian Power Obi, who passed away on Friday, August 23, 2024, following a road accident on the way to participate in the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Pre-season Tournament,” the statement read.
According to the statement, the tragic incident occurred shortly after the Heartland FC contingent left the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri. Travelling in three vehicles, the team was excited about the upcoming tournament. However, just minutes after departure, one of the buses collided with a stationary truck while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle.
“The driver tried as best as he could to avoid the collision, but the impact was severe. Coach Obi was found unconscious with a minor injury to his right leg, and other players sustained injuries,” the statement added.
Obi and the injured players were rushed to a nearby hospital in Okwelle, Onuimo LGA, Imo State, where medical personnel worked tirelessly to save him. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Coach Obi succumbed to his injuries.
Obi’s death has left a significant void in Nigerian football, with tributes pouring in from fans, colleagues, and players. Known for his passion and commitment to the game, Obi was admired as a mentor and tactician.
Heartland FC described him as a “revered coach,” highlighting the positive impact he had on the team during his time with the club.
The funeral service in Owerri drew family members, friends, club officials, players, and members of the football community, all gathered to pay their last respects.
