Race Against Time: Nigeria Hopes for Plumptre’s Return for 2024 Olympics
Nigeria’s preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympics have been clouded by concerns over the fitness of key defender Ashleigh Plumptre. The Al-Ittihad star underwent surgery on her right foot a few months ago, and her recovery timeline is critical as the Olympics draw closer.
Plumptre shared her recovery journey on social media, expressing gratitude to her club and medical team. “Thank you to everyone at @ittihadladiesclub and to Dr. Pieter D’Hooge at @Aspetar for supporting me through my first surgery. It’s been a long time coming trying to get answers but I’m so grateful to now be at this stage,” she wrote.
She also addressed her teammates and fans, saying, “To my @NGSuper_Falcons teammates and Nigerian fans… thank you for your patience and understanding when I’ve not been able to be with you. I can’t wait to be back healthy with you all”.
Plumptre’s injury, which occurred earlier in the season, kept her out of Nigeria’s Olympic qualifiers against South Africa. Despite her absence, the Super Falcons secured their spot in Paris with a 1-0 aggregate win. Now, the focus is on whether she will be fit in time for the Olympics, which start on July 26, 2024.
Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum remains optimistic about her recovery. “Ashleigh’s presence is important to our defense. We are doing everything possible to support her recovery and hope she can join us in Paris,” he said. Her teammates, including Rasheedat Ajibade and Osinachi Ohale, have also expressed their support and well-wishes.
Plumptre’s resilience has been evident throughout her career. From her early days at Leicester City to her current role at Al-Ittihad, she has consistently shown determination and dedication.
The football community is hopeful she can make a full recovery and join the team in Paris. The next few months are important as she works towards being fit for the Olympics, to represent Nigeria on the global stage.
